CONSTANTINIANA DAFNE

The mint at Constantinople opened in 326 with only two officina. According to RIC, the Dafne issue began in A.D. 328, and was struck at seven officina. These coins are the denomination of follis (plural-folles), and sometimes they are silvered. These coins were struck without interruption, and were the only reverse, struck for over two years only in the name of Constantine, until the restructuring in 330. RIC describes the reverse of the Dafne coinage as Victory holding a palm branch in each hand; but Victory is actually only holding a palm branch in her left. In her right hand she is holding a laurel branch. The mint at Constantinople used many different styles for the diadem, for example, for the DAFNE issue, Speck & Huston in Constantine's Dafne Coinage at Constantinople noted 28 different variations of the diadem, many of which are very subtle.
